Benavidez Vs Morrell: Lightweight Fight Set For February 1st
David Benavidez will face WBA ‘regular’ light heavyweight champion David Morrell on February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight will be announced next week.
Fans will see Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) replaced by Cuban talent Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs), who has more power, hand speed, and overall skill than the Mexican ‘Monster. ‘ or should I say, ‘The beast of Ecuador.’
“On February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, there will be a fight between David Benavidez and David Morrell. They can present an event next week in California,” said Salvador Rodriguez to X.
Morrell’s power can destroy Benavidez
If Benavidez loses to Morrell, he can forget the Canelo Alvarez fight forever because he won’t be able to redeem himself in time to get in the mood to fight the superstar before he retires.
Benavidez is a favorite among boxing fans who are unfamiliar with Morrell, but that’s because they haven’t seen the Cuban star. We can see Morrell win because Benavidez is aggressive, some say, ‘deckless’ The fighting style puts him in the line of fire as he sends up in front of his opponents to focus on throwing combinations.
The great Benavidez broke away from this fighting style when he fought at super middleweight because he was much bigger than his opponents.
Still, when he moved up to 175 last summer in his weight class debut against Oleksandr Gvozdyk, he found out just how difficult life was going to be for him. Gvozdyk was driving Benavidez with a lot of hard punches, dominating the second half.
Benavidez was full of excuses after the fight, trying to explain hi’s performance, but the fans saw the truth. He’s not the same fighter without the size advantage he used to have at 168.
There is no word yet on who will be on the undercard, but it may not matter because there is enough fan interest in the Benavidez vs. Morrell for the event to do well without a main card.
Benavidez Needs To Elevate His Game
Benavidez’s last fight against Gvozdyk showed that he is not the same fighter at 175 that he was at 168, and he lacks power. His upper body is thin and wrinkled. Benavidez cannot generate power like the big hitters in the light heavyweight division.
Best Power Punchers at 175
- David Morrell: King
- Artur Beterbiev
- Joshua Buatsi
- Anthony Yarde
The Benavidez-Morrell fight was scheduled for January 25, but it will be moved a week later, which is no big deal. Whoever wins could challenge for the WBC title after light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev faces Dmitry Bivol in a rematch.
