Waymo’s self-driving cars in LA County are now available to everyone
Waymo has announced the expanded availability of its self-driving car service throughout Los Angeles. That’s right. Waymo One is now available to all customers anywhere in the LA region, which is 80 square miles. The company has abandoned a waiting list for local residents. Now LA residents will get the feeling of sitting in endless traffic with a series of cameras and navigation algos leading the way instead of a human.
This expanded service starts today and offers “private rides” at any time of the day or night. Let’s hear from some late night drunks with an algorithm. Waymo also says it will expand the service area in the future. After all, Los Angeles has five counties.
It’s been offering driverless rides for a while now, but with a mandatory waiting list. Waymo One also started small in San Francisco and Phoenix before announcing similar expansions. The service is coming to Austin and Atlanta soon.
In all, the company says more than 300,000 Los Angeles residents have joined the service’s waiting list and Waymo One has completed “hundreds of thousands of toll trips across the city.” Waymo says these driverless rides are also highly rated, with an average rating of 4.7 out of five stars. A recent survey revealed that 98 percent of customers are satisfied with the service.
