AMD AFMF 2 Update Will Soon Bring Bigger Frame Rate Boosts
AMD recently announced an update to its Free Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) software. Currently, in preview mode, AFMF 2 is an in-driver frame generation technology. Consider Nvidia’s DLSS technology or AMD’s FSR 3, except that the above software requires in-game support while AFMF is enabled with AMD GPU drivers. AFMF 2 can improve frame rates in thousands of PC games and is compatible with the company’s RX 6000 and RX 7000 GPUs.
AFMF takes several frames rendered in sequence. From there, the algorithm begins to compute the potential space between transitions in frames. Finally, it connects to the effect, which increases the quality of your frame. Although AFMF is innovative, it’s not as precise as AMD’s FSR 3 technology, but the improvements it brings to many titles are nothing to write off.
AMD’s update includes several tweaks designed to improve performance. The biggest change is focused on reducing the latency of frame generation, AMD claims that AFMF 2 can reduce latency by up to 28%. This is important as lower latency translates to smoother performance overall.
But 2024 wouldn’t be 2024 without a mention of AI. As for AFMF 2, the software has two AI-based enhancements. ‘Search Mode controls how “fallback” works in AFMF 2. “Fallback is when AFMF frame production is temporarily disabled in moving scenes to ensure the best possible composite image quality, which can sometimes cause jitter that affects the smoothness of gameplay. .”
Using an AI-optimized algorithm, Search Mode controls how much scrolling occurs in 1440p and 4K to improve smoothness.
The second feature is ‘Work Mode.’ Instead of the default AFMF Quality 1, you now have default and performance settings. Performance Mode enables maximum overclocking of Radeon graphics chips when enabled, ensuring higher frame rates on some of AMD’s weaker GPUs.
Other updates include full screen borderless support for Radeon RX 7000 and Radeon 700M series cards, and the software is now compatible with Vulcan and Open GL. AFMF also works with AMD Radeon Chill, allowing you to set a driver-controlled FPS cap.
