8BitDo has a new version of the Retro Mechanical keyboard with a built-in numpad

Accessory maker 8BitDo has launched its second new product in two weeks. After showing a game controller connected to Android phones, the company now has a new version of its Retro Mechanical keyboard that adds number and new shortcuts. And yes, the $120 accessory still includes those Big Buttons that beg to be mashed.

Like its predecessor, the 8BitDo Retro 108 Mechanical Keyboard is inspired by Nintendo’s NES and Famicom consoles. The two variants closely resemble the colors of these 1980s gaming machines: white, dark gray and black for the NES-inspired flavor and white and red for the Famicom. Appropriately, the latter has Japanese characters under its English characters.

The keyboard is 22 percent wider than the standard version to accommodate the integrated number and more. The extended area also includes shortcuts for Windows, Calculator, Function Lock and screen lock buttons.

Otherwise, the new keyboard retains the characteristics of the original 87 keys. That includes using it in wired or wireless modes (including Bluetooth or wireless 2.4G), custom key mapping with 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 (Windows only), N-key rollover and hot-swappable keys.

The new model features the same pair of Super Buttons you’ll find with a slight difference. These large programmable keys look like oversized versions of the A and B buttons on the NES and Famicom. They connect directly to the keyboard via a 3.5mm jack, and you can combine up to four sets. You can also order Large Buttons (red, blue or yellow) for $30.24 each.

Officially, 8BitDo says the keyboard is only supported by Windows and Android, probably because its customization software is only available for the former. But you can still use it with macOS; don’t miss out on customizing its keys and macros and receiving software updates.
