As part of the move to stop producing interactive content, Netflix has revealed which titles will soon be removed from its library — and which few made the cut to stick around. Perhaps it is not surprising that one of the lucky remnants may be the highest profile broadcaster in the social space, of 2018. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.
The Verge has confirmed that of the 24 interactive titles currently appearing on Netflix’s “Interactive Specials” content page, only these four will live on December 1: Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend, Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Gryllsand more Bear Grylls survival specials, You vs. Wild. Farewells are usually titles aimed at younger viewers, including 2022 Jurassic Park Camp Cretaceous: Hidden Adventures.
The Verge also points to a game file report from early 2024, when Netflix’s Mike Verdu (former head of games, now “VP, GenAI for Games” at the streamer, according to a LinkedIn post) said the company would move away. interactive storytelling as part of its gameplay, too.
But in the same conversation, Verdu called again The Bandersnatch “a miraculous event”—a sentiment shared by many Black Mirror fans, and arguably the biggest reason why the special continues.
Another reason is certain Black Mirror continued presence on Netflix; after a mind-blowing sixth season set in 2023, creator Charlie Brooker confirmed a seventh season of the dystopian (but mostly scary) series would arrive in 2025. It will boast of a star-studded cast and one of the episodes will work as follows— a Black Mirror first—to the outstanding fourth season of “USS Callister,” which won four Emmy Awards.
But about the interactive future Black Mirror episodes—well, you’ll have to plan a new narrative The BandersnatchThe concept of creating a video game is increasingly scratching that itch.
