The Mozilla Foundation has made a leap for its team. The 30 percent reduction in staff will completely eliminate the nonprofit’s representation and diversity of global programs, according to an internal email sent by Mozilla Foundation Executive Director Nabiha Syed. TechCrunch reported the news, and Mozilla confirmed the cuts in a statement to that publication and to Engadget.
“The Mozilla Foundation is reorganizing teams to increase agility and impact as we accelerate our work to ensure a more open and equitable technology future for all of us,” according to a statement from Brandon Borrman, vice president of communications at Mozilla. “Unfortunately, that means ending some of the tasks we have historically accomplished and ending the roles that go along with them in order to focus more on moving forward.”
While the independent representation phase will end, Mozilla has confirmed its commitment to that project. “We want to make it clear that the restructuring does not stop advocacy; on the contrary, advocacy remains at the core of the work of the Mozilla Foundation and we are in the process of rethinking our approach to it,” Bowman said further commenting.
The Mozilla Foundation is the non-profit arm under the larger Mozilla umbrella; Mozilla Corporation is the arm responsible for the Firefox browser. In February, Mozilla announced that about 60 employees would be laid off, mostly in the product development team.
