Wild robot panel with Mark Hamill

There’s a lot of talent behind DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming releases Wild Robotincluding writer-director Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon) and stars Lupita Nyong’o and Pedro Pascal. But one of the supporting characters is portrayed by an actor who has a lot of interest in the San Diego Comic-Con crowd, which was fun to see. star Wars The legend Mark Hamill as a wonderful addition to the movie panel.

Hamill, of course, is a popular voice actor in addition to his work on a galaxy far, far away (and other projects, such as Mike Flanagan’s Netflix horror series. The fall of the house of Usher). And he brought his wide range of experience to portraying Thorn, the red bear, in the animated film based on Peter Brown’s graphic novel. However, he first explained what drew him to this job.

“When they asked me to consider getting involved [with The Wild Robot], the first thing I did was order a book, and I was just blown away,” Hamill said. “I thought, if they can capture even a small percentage of the success of this book—and I have to tell you, they’ve just done a great job. When I came in to do a voice session, they had pictures. I thought one of the cool things was looking at the book, and they kept that one.”

“But just—you have to see it,” she said. “I feel like I’m behind, when I’m trying to explain star Wars without people seeing. [The Wild Robot] it is emotional and works on so many levels. Kids will love it, but everyone will. I remember my children when they were young, [I’d] take them to watch these movies [like] Garbage Pail children’s movie, [and you had to] keep your opinions to yourself [because the kids are] enjoying it. [But] this is one the whole family will fall in love with.”

When it came to voicing Thorn, Hamill explained, “We always have to go back and say, what’s my job in the movie, to make everything work? What job do I offer? And one of the things about the book and the movie is that all these different animals are thrown into this situation where they have to hold their own. A bear is obviously a predator, but it has to work for a greater good, so it lives peacefully with animals that would normally be their dinner.”

The back is one of the creatures Roz the robot (voiced by Nyong’o) encounters when she is suddenly stranded on an island full of wilderness unlike anything she has ever experienced. It’s an accessible family story with lots of sci-fi elements; and it is the story where Pascal talks about the sly fox. Other voice actors include Catherine O’Hara as the opossum, Bill Nighy as the goose, Kit Connor as the gosling, Stephanie Hsu as the rival robot, and Matt Berry as the beaver. Ving Rhames is also in this game.

Wild Robot will be in theaters on September 27.
