8 Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Horror Books to Read Before Adapting to Them

Since its earliest days, Hollywood has loved adapting books for screenplay—and in recent years, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror books have become increasingly popular with screenwriters and studios. io9 has done a few lists like this in the past (there’s still time to learn Mickey7 before Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson Mickey 17 coming out next year!), but new film and TV projects are always being announced.

Lev Grossman (witches) released this new decision on the famous Knights of the Round Table in the summer and it was very good for students. But even before it hit the bookshelves, Lionsgate had snapped up the rights to a series adaptation, according to a report by Deadline.

In August, Deadline learned that the rights to Neal Stephenson’s 2015 sci-fi novel had been acquired by Legendary Television. (King: Legacy of Monsters). According to the trade, Seveneves “it follows how the best scientific minds reach the same conclusion after a meteor smashes the moon into seven pieces: in two years’ time, all the people on Earth will be destroyed by a ‘torrential rain’ that will make the world uninhabitable. In a fierce race against the inevitable, countries around the world come together to devise a strategy to ensure the survival of mankind, and start a new chapter for humanity.”

Matt Dinniman’s indie novel (the first in a seven-part series) received a traditional publishing release in August, the same month that the TV series was picked up by the team that included Seth MacFarlane’s production company. According to Deadline, the battle for the spot was “very competitive,” with Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok, The Mandalorian) ride to write adaptation. Who will play Princess Donut, Carl’s sidekick? Place all bets now.

Bethany C. Morrow’s dystopian 2018 novel is set in a world where people can’t extract their memories—and then relive them over and over again, with tragic consequences. In August, it was announced in The Hollywood Reporter that the actress turned Nesta Cooper (Apple TV +’s Look) will take on a big screen adaptation.

A short story of Game of Thrones author George RR Martin (from the 1982 multi-author anthology The Amazons II) will form the basis of an adventure film from Resident Evil the team of Paul WS Anderson and Milla Jovovich, with Guardians of the GalaxyDave Bautista is also part of the cast. According to Deadline, his story suggests that the film has already been completed as it is about the acquisition of its US rights, “the story centers on a queen who, wishing to fulfill her love, makes a bold move: she sends a powerful and feared sorceress. Gray Alys (Jovovich) goes to the ghostly wilderness of the Lost Lands in search of magical power, where the witch and her guide, Boyce (Bautista), who is a flood, must conquer and defeat man and demon.”

With all the big name broadcast announcements by Edgar Wright Running Man We’ve been getting it lately, of course probably how likely to forget More Stephen King is on his way.

These three are among the most recently announced, so consider this just a drop in the King bucket: a tale of child genius. Institution gets MGM+ series starring Mary-Louise Parker and Ben Barnes (read more details at Deadline); a wonderful dream A legend produced by the series—outlet TBD—by A24, director Paul Greengrass, and executive producer JH Wyman (edge); and frequent replacements CarrieKing’s first published novel, will be an eight-episode series for Amazon Prime Video by noted King fan Mike Flanagan.
