11 people died in Novi Sad, Serbia when a train station platform collapsed
At least eleven people have died after a concrete roof collapsed at a railway station in northern Serbia, the country’s Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said, adding that the number could rise.
People were sitting on benches under the overhang of a station in Novi Sad, Serbia’s second city, when it fell local time (11:00 GMT), reported Radio Television of Serbia (RTS).
There are three people in the hospital. Among them are two women who were pulled alive from under the rubble a few hours after the collapse.
About 80 rescuers from all over the country took part in the search, using heavy equipment.
The railway station building was renovated in 2021, and renovated again this year for its official opening on 5 July.
Serbian media quoted Railway Infrastructure of Serbia, which is responsible for the concrete bridge, as saying that the station was not rebuilt either.
Prime Minister Miloš Vučević said that anyone found guilty of keeping the bed, which was built in 1964, will be held accountable, the media reported.
Vučević said Friday was one of the most difficult days in Novi Sad’s post-war history.
“This is a big, bad tragedy for Novi Sad and for all of Serbia,” he added, sending condolences to the victims’ families and thanking first responders.
The government declared Saturday as an official day of fasting.
