Lego Just Signed a Team of Three Directors for Future Live-Action Movies

Lego’s deal with Universal—struck after its partnership with Warner Bros., home of The Lego Moviewhich ended in 2020—is generating huge dividends: the two companies recently signed three directors, each of whom will make a live-action film. And the list is impressive: Joe Cornish (Attack the Block)Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle again The Next Level), and Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman).
The news comes from Deadline, which has a list of names and not much else, noting that “all movie episodes are still being wrapped.” Kasdan, you have it Red One came out later this year with the third Jumanji The film, set for December 2026, will work from a script by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul based on an “original idea” and an earlier draft by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows. Jenkins’ film will be based on a script he co-wrote with his former DC team Geoff Johns. Finally, Cornish will be rewriting Heather Anne Campbell’s script from Simon Rich’s treatment.
That’s a lot of moving bricks, though it’s worth repeating (again) that these are live projects. Until now Lego and Universal have been sticking to the animation industry, working together on a few Lego Jurassic Park/Jurassic World-themed video games and TV series. There was also that Lego-ified They are not bad trailer, and Universal’s division, Focus Features, was behind the latest Lego-animated Pharrell Williams biopic Episode by Episode.
So, what might a live-action Lego movie look like? Will they be based on popular (but non-IP) Lego sets or concepts? Will Lego itself play an important role in the story? When might one of these movies hit theaters? And does this mean that Patty Jenkins was teased for a long time star Wars the movie isn’t happening (again) after all?
