Futurama returns to its new home on Hulu on Monday, July 29, for a 10-episode season that will delight fans old and new. There are two more seasons on the way, with hopefully more to come—and the cast and crew were at San Diego Comic-Con to celebrate the show’s recurring cancellations and comebacks.
Executive producers David X. Cohen and Claudia Katz—who agreed to do it love making a real big screen Futurama movie the other day—spoke at the SDCC press table about the show ahead of its season 12 premiere. io9 got the chance to ask the question we’ve always asked ourselves: Futurama he’s been around, on and off the air, for 25 years. Is there someone within the team who is experienced and has been appointed as the story keeper, to ensure that all progress is consistent?
“It depends on what part you’re looking at,” Cohen said. “Because [animation studio] Rough Draft has all the art going back forever. And like every time in 10 years when we renew, they have to redraw everything in high resolution because the TV has many scan lines. [laughs].”
Katz intervened. “We’ve now remade our title sequence in 3D, I think three times; this last time it was in 4K, and they had to redo everything. It’s funny because I was showing it to David and we were seeing things that we hadn’t seen before, because it was in 4K. We were like, ‘What is that? Did you put that in?’ ‘No, it’s always been there.’ ‘Oh, good,’” she said.
Cohen continued. “One thing I will say that allows this program to come back is that there is a lot going on behind the scenes. Many of the same animators and producers at Rough Draft Studios, for example, all of our voice actors stayed with the whole show, which was very serious and a little lucky statistically, maybe. And then, even writers, even now, writing staff are at least part writers [who] they’ve been on and off for 20-plus years, too [we also] have new people come to the show as fans.”
Katz added, “And it’s the same on the artistic side—like you have your classic types and then your new type. [talent].”
Cohen then had a secret to share about how the show’s writers maintain all of that Futurama lore straight. “The embarrassing thing I will admit is that in the writers’ room we always discuss with these fan sites to see what happened in the old episodes. Even those of us who wrote the episodes. I have been to the fan Futurama For example, at night gossip and came a second time. It’s hard to compete with fans for a database.”
And, of course, “Sometimes, we just forget things too. Like, there’s something wrong with the animation—you don’t want to blame the animators because everyone else forgot,” he says. “The writers didn’t say anything about it. But Leela’s father, his mouth was opening here and there but now it is opening [up and down]. But then it will backfire [the first way]. The thing is, he has a very flexible jaw! So, in a way, some things fall through the cracks of time. “
