Jeff VanderMeer returns to Area X
One thing I didn’t foresee happening this year is that we get something new in Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach series. But the author announced exactly that in April, and I’ve been counting the days until the book’s release ever since. Absolutionthe fourth novel in what previously stood as a trilogy, hits shelves this week and takes us back to the beginning of Area X and the first infamous trip to explore it.
For the uninitiated, the series is about a strange coastal region in the US that is mysteriously sealed behind an invisible border and has returned to an unruly state. A shadowy government agency has been tasked with studying it, but the people from those missions may never get out, or come back. different. The series includes Annihilation (which inspired the 2018 film starring Natalie Portman), Authority again Acceptance.
Ten years after the series was originally released, a prequel feels like the perfect way to delve back into the mysteries of Area X and the Southern Reach. The trilogy ended in a way that answered some questions but also left a lot up in the air. And while you probably shouldn’t expect Absolution to wrap it all up, it gives us more insight into the early days of the anomaly and the perspective of key characters in that timeline, such as Lowry. Absolution it’s tall – it’s structured in three parts like a novella, and it’s almost 500 pages long. Which is great, because I can’t get enough of Area X.
