Roblox has adopted several new policies designed to give parents more control over how their kids use the sprawling online gaming platform. reported that the company has created a new type of parent account so that the guardian can supervise their children’s online activities with friends. Roblox also now requires parental consent for users under 13 to access certain features. Users 9 and under will need permission to access game modes with moderate violence or crude humor. The letter said the changes are scheduled to take effect next month.
Concern for the safety of young players has been a constant issue in Roblox. The platform faced a claim of child abuse in 2022. hesitated to host the game on its hardware with questions about whether Roblox exposed children to inappropriate sexual content, and similar justifications led earlier this year. Hindenburg Research recently released a report on unethical and misleading financial activity at Roblox (although that source has a shaky reputation). An investigation by Bloomberg business week found that at least a dozen people have been arrested by US law enforcement since 2018 for abusing or abducting child victims they met on Roblox.
