They say that youth is wasted on the young. But here’s something that should give kids an idea – and if you don’t help them see how beautiful they are, we don’t know what else to say.
This news comes from Spyglass Hill Golf Course, one of the most popular courses at Pebble Beach Resorts. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., Spyglass opened in 1966. The following year, it became part of the AT&T Pebble Beach Championship (at the time, the event was known as the Crosby Clambake). It has retained that role ever since.
Aside from its resort sibling, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass is the most prestigious public course on the Monterey Peninsula, and it charges accordingly. The green fee is $495 for tourists, and non-tourism visitors pay that plus carriage fee.
But all that changes if you’re a young golfer — because kids can now play Spyglass Hill Golf Course for just $5.
There are caveats, of course, that require some context.
This steal of a deal is the result of a new three-year partnership between Pebble Beach Company and Youth on Course, a non-profit organization that provides 18-year-olds and under with access to a range of golf opportunities.
Through the partnership, Pebble Beach has become the new national headquarters for the Careers on Course internship program, which provides hands-on training for Careers on Course members in various aspects of golf course management and operations. The aim is to promote social and educational growth, while helping to prepare young people for future career opportunities in the sport.
The internship program runs for six to eight weeks in the summer – but not a green fee discount, as it is available. throughout the year (block event).
With the new partnership, Spyglass Hill Golf Course has joined a network of thousands of courses in the United States, Canada, and Australia where Youth on Course members can play for $5. Parents are allowed to accompany children, but only Youth on Course members can play. Three other courses at Pebble – Spanish Bay, Del Monte, and the par-3 Hay course are now part of this network.
As part of the program, Spyglass now sets aside one session per day (four players) for New Course members. Times are updated nightly and can be booked up to a week in advance, meaning the next available date is usually the week of departure. As one might imagine, times go by fast. To try and grab one, users must go through the new Course app and end up on the GolfNow platform.
Getting older has some benefits. It offers smart and, in some cases, high discounts. But not $5 Green Money at Spyglass.
Ah, yes, being young again.
