Having a shot routine is the best way to ensure success off the tee. Here is what I recommend.

1. Stand behind the ball and visualize the shot you want to hit, be it a fade, draw, or whatever. If you’re not good at visualizing, focus on your aim, line up your club where you want the ball to land.

2. Tap the club down (the dynamic motion that tells you it’s time to go) and start going for the ball, keeping your eye on the target the whole time. (Speaking of targets, all-time champion winner Jack Nicklaus used to pick four: three three inches behind the ball, one three inches in front, 20 yards out and the actual target — all on the line. You should try it.)

3. As you enter the address zone, be sure to direct your clubface to your target first before aligning your body. Many weekend players get this backwards.

4. Take a final look at the target, inhale and exhale, and swing the club — an important movement to keep yourself cool. Once your pre-shooting process is complete, focus on one idea and go.

A consistent pre-shooting routine can pay dividends.
