We Finally Know a Little About the New Karate Kid Movie
We’ve known for months that the sensis played by Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan will be teaming up for a new movie The Karate Kid the whole place. But, in a world where the Netflix show Cobra Kai there is, what exactly is this movie? However, today at New York Comic Con, Sony finally pulled back the curtain a bit on the film we now know is called. Legends of Karate.
The film stars Ben Wang as Li Fong, a new student who somehow learns martial arts from the likes of Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) and Mr. Han (Chan). Joshua Jackson, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Ming-Na Wen, Aramis Knight, Sadie Stanley, Wyatt Olef, and Jennifer-Lyn Christie also star in the film. Chan and Macchio posted a video to introduce the film’s first trailer, which was shown in a room only, but said that since New York City is playing such a big role, it was the perfect place to do so.
What we learn from the trailer, or at least we can try and see, is that Mr. Han seems to be leading between the two characters of the legacy. He talks about a culture steeped in history talking about both kung fu and karate. We see him and LaRusso meet, and LaRusso thinks he wants Mr. Miyagi. “I didn’t come looking for Mr. Miyagi,” said Han. “I even want you.”
We get footage of Li (Wang) walking around New York, jumping on the subway, and training with Mr. Han. A fight breaks out in the streets as Li is chased by an unknown assailant. Later, as the action builds to a climax and cuts to separate training montages with Li and Mr. Han, the trailer culminates with Li fighting a few matches in the tournament. “Two branches, one tree,” LaRusso said, implying that he and Han would join forces on something.
So we know what we could see in the announcement, but not much. It’s about two senses coming together somehow. They have a shared history that LaRusso is unaware of. Li is a student at its core. It is mainly based in New York City. That last part, more than anything else, teases the answer to the big question: the characters from it cobra kai, which seems to end before this, of course? Probably not, but anything is possible.
And while the trailer hasn’t been released publicly, we’ve got the poster.
Legends last forever.
