De La Hoya Responds to Haney’s Claim: Haney-Garcia “Didn’t Sell Out”
Promoter Oscar De La Hoya grilled Devin and Bill Haney during Thursday’s Clap Back week, mocking them for their lawsuit against his company, Golden Boy Promotions, and Ryan Garcia based on a fight earlier this year on April 20. The Haneys are suing Ryan Garcia for infringement contract for his positive PED Ostarine test.
De La Hoya says Haney wants “No money,” as he said the fight with Ryan only resulted in 300,000 PPV buys. This is a lower figure than many expected due to the huge hype going into the game. Ryan’s massive social media presence didn’t help the PPV numbers for the fight, and that’s the weird part. They chose not to buy this war in bulk.
Ryan’s lack of attitude during the build-up, which made him appear unmoved, made some boxing fans think the fight was going to be an uphill battle. That may have contributed to pay-per-view success. In retrospect, it would have been better if Ryan had behaved in his normal manner. Haney was the clear favorite based on his better resume, which included wins over Regis Prograis, Vasily Lomachenko, Jorge Linares, and Joseph Diaz.
De La Hoya sounds like he wants Bill and Devin to drop their case rather than go to court, but it doesn’t look like they’re going to do that.
“Several weeks ago, the Haneys filed a lawsuit in New York state alleging battery, fraud, and breach of contract,” Oscar De La Hoya said in his Clap Back Thursday on social media.
“They don’t believe the fact that Garcia vs Haney did just over 300,000 homes, and they have been paid what they owed. They want more money that doesn’t exist. Number one, Bill, we live in the same fancy place in Henderson [Nevada]. You could knock on my board and ask to see my books. We have told you many times that this fight was not for sale.
A rematch between Haney and Garcia may not be a good fit, given the low numbers from their previous fight on April 20. Ryan would be better off fighting Gervonta Davis in a rematch or fighting Teofimo Lopez or Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis. Ryan is popular enough to fight anyone and put up good numbers.
