Halloween is almost upon us, which means you and everyone you know should be looking for fun ways to celebrate our darkest and worst holiday. Personally, my favorite way to enjoy October is by watching horror movies at full speed. For those looking to kick things up a notch, a horror-themed Airbnb in the mountains of California might do the trick.
Unique Stays Club, the family-owned company behind the property, has styled it to remind guests of their favorite horror films. The house (advertised on Airbnb as: “Horror Themed Cabin! Retro Scary Movie-Inspired”), is located in the remote area of Sugarloaf, not far from Big Bear Lake in southern California. The stunning retro, mid-century modern interior includes a bathroom designed to look like a bathroom The Shining, complete with a door with the words “REDRUM” written on it and an ax mounted on it.
Also seen in various videos and rental photos: the Necronomicon figure, since The Bad Dead; goat’s head raised evocative A witch; a “hacked” rotary phone that produces quotes from horror movies when you pick it up; Freddy Krueger’s jersey hangs in the closet. The apartment is also equipped with a device to exorcise visitors with strange sounds and flashing lights, although these effects can be turned off by flipping a wall switch labeled “Exorcise Demons.”

If watching scary movies is one of the most fun parts of the Halloween season, a haunted house might be the perfect place to watch them because it feels like a place outside. Friday the 13th. Rentals include favorite horror DVDs and streaming, owners say.
SFGATE recently interviewed members of the DeRose family, who own Unique Stays Club. They recognize the importance of “theming”—an industry trend that sees rental property owners become more creative in drawing customers. “Without the theme, I think we’re going to be struggling at the top,” Travis DeRose, Big Bear cabin manager, told the outlet. “We don’t have a view, we don’t have a Jacuzzi or a pool or any of those fancy facilities – but we have a machine that activates special effects that scare you.”
