IX is updating its privacy policy to allow third parties to train AI models with its data
IX is updating its privacy policy with new language that allows it to provide user data to third-party “partners” to train AI models. The , which will go into effect on November 15, 2024, will appear to open the door to systems like Reddit where third parties can pay to obtain license data from X.
The updated policy shared by X includes a new section titled “third party partners.”
Depending on your settings, or if you decide to share your data, we may share or disclose your information with third parties. If you do not opt out, in some cases the recipients of the information may use it for their own independent purposes beyond those specified in X’s Privacy Policy, including, for example, training their artificial intelligence models, whether productive or otherwise.
While the policy mentions the ability to opt out, it is not clear how users will do so. As TechCrunch the policy points to a user settings menu, but there doesn’t seem to be an opt-out control for data sharing. The policy doesn’t go into effect until next month, so there’s still room for change. UX did not respond to a request for comment.
If X were to start licensing its data to other companies, it could open up new revenue for the social media company, which it has seen from major advertisers.
In addition to the privacy policy, iX also revises strict penalties for companies caught “scrubbing” large numbers of tweets. In a section titled “liquidated damages” the company says anyone who views or accesses more than a million posts per day will be fined $15,000.
Protecting our users’ data and our system resources is important to us. You also agree that, to the extent permitted by applicable law, if you violate the Terms, or induce or assist others to do so, in addition to all other legal remedies available to us, you will be jointly and severally liable for liquidated damages for requesting, viewing, or accessing more than 1,000,000 ( including reply posts, video posts, photo posts, and other posts) in any 24 hour period – $15,000 USD for 1,000,000 posts.
X owner Elon Musk has criticized “scratching.” Last year, the company temporarily blocked people from viewing tweets while logged out, in Musk’s move to block scrapers. He also moved X’s API to the background, which greatly hampered the ability of researchers to study what was happening on the platform. He also used the alleged “resignation” to justify organizations that tried to read hate speech and other issues from the platform.
