Mbappé is shocked by the Swedish rape investigation
French football captain Kylian Mbappé is “surprised” to see his name linked to media reports about the rape investigation in Sweden, but his lawyer says he is calm because he has nothing to regret.
Swedish authorities have confirmed that the chief prosecutor is investigating a report of alleged rape in Stockholm without disclosing who is involved in the case.
However, the Swedish media reports that the French footballer is linked to allegations related to an incident at a hotel in the center of Stockholm last Thursday.
Kylian Mbappé also responded, summarizing the reports as “NO NEWS”, to his 14 million followers on X.
Swedish media say the footballer spent two days in Stockholm last week, visiting a restaurant on Thursday evening before heading to a nightclub. He was photographed walking in the center of the capital with three other people.
Swedish prosecutors clarified on Monday that according to the “crime” report sent to the police, the incident under investigation took place on October 10 at the hotel.
The police were seen visiting the Bank’s hotel where they were staying on Monday, the police took the bags with them. Another report said they took clothes from the hotel as evidence.
“The investigation is led by senior prosecutor Marina Chirakovawho cannot provide more information at this time,” said the Swedish prosecutor’s office.
Mbappé was not called up for the French football club’s UEFA Nations League matches last week and has returned to training with his club Real Madrid.
Lawyer Petra Eklund, acting for the plaintiff in this case, said that he cannot comment on this case at this time due to legal issues.
However, Sweden’s SVT and other news outlets reported that the allegations included allegations of rape, which is considered a low level of suspicion under Swedish law.
Kylian Mbappé’s lawyers criticized the media reports as defamatory, and on Tuesday night the lawyer Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard appeared on the big evening news program on TF1, saying that nothing is known about the complaint even if it was made against his client, who he said was “surprised” by the media frenzy.
“[Kylian Mbappé] he is not alone. He has never been put in a position to end up in a situation that could lead to him endangering himself,” he stressed.
“Because of this that rules out any possibility of any criminal activity on his part. I can tell you that with absolute certainty.”
He said the complaint did not prove anything and he was preparing to file his own defamation complaint.
Meanwhile, in a social media post on Monday night, the footballer appeared to link to reports from Sweden in a case with his former French club Paris Saint-Germain over €55m (£46m) he alleged was not paid in wages and bonuses.
“It can be predicted, the night before the hearing, as if by chance,” he said.
Kylian Mbappé was PSG’s all-time leading goalscorer but left the club in the summer after months of controversy. Tuesday’s hearing was before the complaints committee of the French football league (LFP). PSG denies the player’s allegations and one of Mbappé’s lawyers said that a decision is expected to be made on the 25th of October.
Sweden’s rape laws were changed in 2018so the perpetrator can be found guilty of reckless assault or rape if “he should have seen that the other person was not willingly participating”.
