A massive Pokémon leak reveals beta designs, source codes and plans for upcoming titles

Pokémon developer Game Freak has confirmed that it has breached the law as a number of internal materials relating to the franchise – from source codes to originals, and, in some cases, scrapped character designs – reached social media this weekend. In a letter published Thursday (translated from Japan), the company said it discovered that its servers had been hacked in August and that sensitive employee information had been leaked. It did not address the Pokémon leak, although a large amount of this content appears to have been published online after the statement was issued.

Leaked documents and photos flooded in and X started dumping them on Saturday afternoon. The “Teraleak” files, as some fans call them, are suspected to include the source codes of past games such as Pokémon HeartGold again SoulSilver, codenames for Switch 2 and the upcoming Gen 10 The Pokémon games — “Ounce” and “Gaia,” respectively — indicators in development The Pokémon MMO, and internal discussions from design meetings. The scope of the leak is extensive, revealing tons of beta character designs and concept art in addition to source codes. Game Freak said in a statement that it is strengthening its security and apologized to those affected by the breach, noting that an unauthorized third party obtained the personal information of more than 2,600 current and former employees.
