Kamala Harris puts pressure on Donald Trump over medical records
Kamala Harris has released her medical records, which concluded she is in “excellent health” and fit for the presidency.
Following the disclosure, the Democratic Party’s nominee to be the next president of the United States accused Donald Trump of failing to release his health records.
The vice president also said his Republican rival “doesn’t want the American people to see if he’s ready to be president”.
Without disclosing Trump’s health records, the former president’s team responded by quoting his doctor as saying that he is in “good and excellent health”.
Trump’s campaign said the Republican nominee “has a very busy and active campaign schedule” and said Harris “doesn’t have the energy of President Trump”.
The trading of barbs comes after the White House released a medical report that said Vice President Harris has the “physical and mental fitness” needed to be president.
Dr Joshua Simmons, a US Army colonel who has been Harris’ doctor for more than three years, wrote that his latest physical in April was “amazing” – adding that he maintains a healthy and active lifestyle.
She also revealed that she has a family history of prostate cancer and suffers from allergies – going on to say that she continues with recommended preventive care, including colonoscopies and annual mammograms.
After the medical records were released, a spokesperson for the Harris campaign said in a post on social media: “your turn, Donald Trump”.
Before a campaign event in North Carolina, Harris once again sought to question his opponent’s sanity and “how he moves”.
Democrats have been attacking Trump’s 78-year-old age and mental toughness, months after Republicans directed similar criticism at President Joe Biden before he dropped out of the race.
If elected president again in November, Trump will complete his second term as the oldest president in American history at the age of 82 – although it is a record that will be shared by Biden, who will be the same age when he leaves office in January.
Responding to pressure from the Harris camp, Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung said he “voluntarily released” updates from his doctor and the doctor who treated him after the surgery. an assassination attempt on him this summer in Butler, Pennsylvania.
“They all concluded that he is fit and healthy enough to be Commander-in-Chief,” added Cheung.
He also cited a November 2023 medical report that said “Trump’s physical tests were within normal range and his mental tests were abnormal”.
National polls suggest Harris is slightly ahead of Trump but the numbers in the battleground states are very close.
