Joker 2’s Amazing Actor Defends Its Split, Shocking Ending
It’s only been a week Joker: Folie in Deux in the theater, but the reaction and reception could not be more distinguished. People who have seen it (or just read the synopsis online) have a lot of thoughts on various parts of the movie, especially its ending. Director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have already talked about it (and how they came up with it), so now it’s time for the film’s secret main player to share his thoughts on the matter.
After being completely rejected by Lee (Lady Gaga) and sent back to Arkham Asylum, Arthur (Joaquin Phoenix) is seduced by another inmate played by Connor Storrie, who has been secretly watching him throughout the film. The prisoner tells Arthur a joke, then stabs him to death before carving that old Glasgow smile onto his face. Just like that, he has taken on the mantle of the Joker.
Speaking to TMZ, Storrie said it’s not really surprising that the ending made fans feel a certain way. Like many, he was thrown by the news that this would be a musical, considering that it was “raw and ugly” for the first time. The Joker it was. But as far as he was concerned, divisive views were inevitable, and may be justified in some respects. “I prefer things to be different than boring or clean,” he said. “You don’t throw around so much without knowing that it gives people an opportunity to not be involved in your decisions.”
Although Storrie praised Phillips for “having the balls to make a bold swing,” he said he never thought about it. Folie in Deux as a matter of secret origin. (It seems like he didn’t even know what else was going to happen in the movie other than him killing Arthur.) He knows how great the Joker is, obviously, but insisted that he “doesn’t think that [ending] it can say or where it can go. It is very clear that this is Joaquin’s film, [and] this is my place for that. […] It’s more a part of Arthur’s story than anything else after that.”
Joker: Folie in Deux now playing in theaters.
