Considering the big-ticket investment Amazon Prime Video has made The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power so far, it’s a little surprising that the broadcaster hasn’t officially confirmed that a third season is on the way, especially after all the dangling threads left at the end of the second season. But the decision-makers seem to be still very happy with their expensive plan.
Speaking to Variety, Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, was asked what she thought about the reaction Rings of Powerin the second season, and he went well and talked about the viewership numbers. “Obviously the advertising standards are very different and all that [to season one],” Salke told traders. “But as mentioned, more than 55 million people have joined since the launch of the second season. And if you look at the long-term trajectory, which is how this company looks at assets like that, this is a long-term investment in that franchise. […] There are more than 150 million viewers watching and participating in the show. So I feel really good. I think we all do.”
Variety followed up by asking whether Amazon was still willing—as reports in Variety and elsewhere before the first season indicated—to complete the show’s 50 episodes. “[That] “Sacrifice has never been the driving force behind what we do,” said Salke. “We will continue to do this game as long as we see the customers of the world who like it and watch it until they get there – which is a business. Obviously, we need more people to show up. And there are a lot of people, so there is no debate whether the game will continue or not.”
This is good news for fans of the show, as the viewership numbers—which are by no means an exact figure that can be interpreted at the time of broadcast—seem to show a few viewers who watched the second season of the show whose first season dropped alarmingly. head on.
