Severance Is Already Picking Up Its Third Season
One of the most anticipated second seasons in recent memory has to be Separation: not only has it been a long time since the first season premiered (February 2022) and it became an instant fan favorite, but that cliffhanger at the end of the season was warriors. With the usual multi-episode wait punctuated by the 2023 Hollywood strikes, we learned in July that the Emmy-winning show will finally return to Apple TV+ in early 2025. Now, one of the show’s writers is teasing the third time season is already in the works.
To be clear, Apple TV+ has yet to officially launch Separation season three, but if the second season is as successful as its first season, it’s not hard to imagine the broadcaster finally giving the go-ahead. Speaking to IndieWire, Separation season two writer and executive producer Mohamad El Masri teased that Dan Erickson (Separation‘s creator) and director executive producer Ben Stiller are already thinking about the series’ full arc, including its finale.
“There was always thinking about future seasons,” El Masri told IndieWire, noting that Erickson, whom he called “very meticulous and very detailed,” is very focused and knowledgeable about the structure of the mystery box; the second season was already being written while the first season was being created.
“Even in the second season we were talking about what is the last game and how does this game end? A lot of work was about that. I think there’s a natural overlap going on, especially in the second season of the show, that you have to keep [the momentum] we are leaving,” continued El Masri. “People are interested, people are watching, and now with season two, you have to really think about, not just how is season two going to deliver in a satisfying way, but how does this kick off season three and beyond?”
In other words, there’s careful intent behind the show’s most offbeat moments—those baby goats included—and the creative minds behind them put the puzzle pieces together with great imagination. As IndieWire notes, Erickson gave El Masri “a really big chain Bible” when he got on the boat, taken from the five years he donated. SeparationThe layout of the world before it reaches Apple TV+.
While a third season may be hypothetical for now, a second season is locked in: it will premiere on January 17, 2025 on Apple TV+. It will run for 10 episodes (five directed by Stiller). Here’s the official trailer, with a vague hint of what’s to come in season two:
“Come in SeparationMark Scout (Adam Scott) leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a dissociation process, which surgically separates their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in ‘work life balance’ is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unfolding mystery that will force him to face the truth about his work… and himself. In the second season, Mark and his friends learn about the painful consequences of breaking the barrier of isolation, which leads them further down the path of sorrow.”
The second season cast, led by Scott, also includes Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Zach Cherry, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette; Sarah Bock joins as a new series regular, and other new faces will include Gwendoline Christie, Merritt Wever, John Noble, Alia Shawkat, Bob Balaban, Robby Benson, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and more.
