Stephen Ames takes a 1-shot, first-round lead at the Senior Open

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland – Stephen Ames shot a one-under 68 on Thursday to take the first-round lead at the Senior British Open in Carnoustie.

The natural-born Canadian citizen from Trinidad was one stroke ahead of four players – Richard Green, Paul Broadhurst, Peter Baker and KJ Choi. Scott Hend shot a 70 and is in sixth place.

Padraig Harrington, Retief Goosen and Thomas Bjorn shot 71. Darren Clarke and Bernhard Langer had 74 and Vijay Singh shot 78.

John Daly, who withdrew from the British Open last week after injuring his left knee during the first round, has withdrawn again ahead of Thursday’s match at Carnoustie.

Ames complained about the slow play.

“I think overall, the pace of play got in our way a little bit down the stretch,” Ames said. “So that disappointed me.

“But I think overall this is a good test this week for us. So I’m happy for the 68.”

Green, a 53-year-old Australian, finished second and third in the senior majors – the Senior PGA and the US Senior Open – this year. and says that while his confidence level is high, he is “still very humble about my golf.”

“I understand that it’s difficult to win when compared to the current field,” said Green. “But those two results obviously built confidence for those big events and big tournaments, and hopefully I can get there again on Sunday.”
