This Is Why Chris Evans Agreed To Do Deadpool & Wolverine

Ryan Reynolds knew he was going to appear in Chris Evans Deadpool and Wolverine it wouldn’t be easy. Even though the Marvel mainstay wouldn’t return as his signature role as Captain America, Reynolds figured it wouldn’t hurt to make the role more important than just a cameo. And, having done so, Evans agreed… with one small caveat.

In the comments of the director of Deadpool and Wolverineavailable digitally now, Reynolds and writer/director Shawn Levy talked about the film’s dramatic final scene. The scene reveals that Evans’ character, Johnny Storm, said everything Deadpool said he did with Cassandra Nova. And it was that profanity-laced speech, and especially its placement, that made Evans come back.

“Well, at the risk of being irrelevant with my theme of being a godmother, I really wanted Chris to do this, to play the Human Torch in this film. But not as a favor,” Reynolds said. “I wanted to find a way to make him say ‘Yes’ because it was a part he couldn’t resist. So the tag at the end of this movie is a scene that I think I wrote in five minutes. And part of it was to see if you would see a sequence or a scene and say ‘Yes’ on its merits alone, but I also wasn’t sure if this scene would work. And he read the scene and he called me and said, ‘I’ll do it as long as that end credits tag is in this movie.’ That’s when I realized the homie wasn’t kidding. He was ready to let it fly.”

Talk about Evans having a Marvel vibe. He knew that showing up in the credits would make fans happy, but he also knew that sitting there cursing would be a good Deadpool subversion of that. So he entered.

“I said to Chris ‘We can have fans or big name cards, whatever you want, whatever’ and he’s just like ‘Screw that dude. I’m coming ready to go,’” Reynolds said. “I think this one only fired two or three shots. It was amazing and a side of him that I don’t think we’ve ever seen, which I love.”

And we love it too. Check back next week for more Deadpool and Wolverine digital release, out now. It will be available on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD on October 22.
