‘Ring of fire’ eclipse shines over South America
A “ring of fire” eclipse was visible from Easter Island, Chile and Buenos, Argentina on October 2.
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon casts a shadow over the Earth and in a total eclipse, the entire disc of the Sun is blocked.
An annular eclipse is different because the other Sun will still be visible as a spectacular ring with the center blocked by the Moon.
The reason for this ring – known as the “ring of fire” – is because the Moon is at its furthest point from Earth, called apogee, and therefore appears smaller in the sky.
