Google has reportedly released the Juno YouTube app from the Vision Pro App Store
Juno, the highly recommended (unofficial) YouTube app for Vision Pro, has been removed from the Apple App Store after complaints from Google, according to Juno developer Christian Selig. Google, Selig said, suggested that his app infringed on their trademark.
It’s the latest reversal from Selig, which shut down its popular Apollo last year after the company changed developer policies to charge for using its API. The shutdown of Apollo and other apps like it has sparked outrage among Reddit users and moderators.
In this case, Selig says he doesn’t want drama, noting that the $5 app is a “hobby project” to consider improving visionOS. “I had a lot of fun building Juno, but it was always something I saw as a small app that I built for fun,” Selig wrote on his website. “Because of that, I have no desire to throw this big fight like it happened with Reddit years ago.”
It is unclear which part of Juno may have been the problem. Selig says Google referenced “trademarks and icons” in a message to Apple, “saying Juno is not following YouTube’s guidelines and is modifying the website” in an unauthorized manner. “I disagree with this personally, as Juno is just a web view, and works less than a browser extension that modifies CSS to make the website and video player look like ‘visionOS’,” explained Selig. “No logos are placed other than those already on the website, and the suffix ‘YouTube’ is allowed in their marketing guidelines.”
Google hasn’t made a deal with YouTube’s Vision Pro app, although the company said such a program is “on our map.” The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Selig says that people who have already paid for the app should be able to continue using it for now, though there’s a chance that a future YouTube update could end up bricking it.
