Gaten Matarazzo on Stranger Things’ Final Journey and Preparation for the End

It’s always a big deal when a big show ends, and the following year, Netflix says goodbye to it Stranger Things after five seasons. For many actors, the show gave them new roles that they used to help build their careers, and leaving it behind so long evokes mixed feelings.
Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin, recently told The Hollywood Reporter that he is in the middle of nowhere. By his own admission, he was initially ready to do the final season, but now that the show is nearing the end of production, his tune has understandably changed. Now, he finds himself reminiscing about how young he and his clients like Caleb McLaughlin and Millie Bobby Brown were when they started out. And like seniors about to graduate high school, he felt a little stuck in time: the “different things” from back in the first season feel like they happened recently.
“Right now I’m almost done Stranger Things longer than I’ve ever done,” Matarazzo noted. “It was amazing to see how quickly everything happened. […] Agreeing and letting go is difficult, in work and in life. You can always expect that next season, intellectual and emotional work. So it’s going to be a different change and I can’t wait to see what happens next.”
As for what happened next in the Strange things, Matarazzo had an interesting sense of humor. Where previous seasons have featured Dustin with a different character, this is now the case for all of the main characters. He told THR that they will all be “paired differently” from their regular teams, which will lead to “a lot of fun opportunities” for everyone. Without giving anything away, he revealed that Dustin will be sharing the screen with his co-stars again never before. “It’s a good balance of getting to know each other and keeping that family close,” he teased, “but also seeing how much we can elevate these characters from each other.”
