Todd Phillips Thinks His Joker Could Be A Batman Fanboy

Todd Phillips’ Big Promise The Joker was stripping away the comic book elements of the venerable character and showing what would happen if an average guy in 1980s Gotham decided to put on clown makeup. (Turns out, things didn’t go well, especially for everyone around him.) A young Bruce Wayne is in the first movie, and you might wonder what would happen if the old Batman met this kind of enemy. According to director/writer Todd Phillips, he thinks Arthur Fleck would just think Batman is neat. (Shocked, I’m sure.)

In a recent IGN interview, Phillips explained how Arthur would “be in awe of the alpha male Batman. I think [he’d] look and enjoy.” In his reading, Arthur is “fascinated by free men,” like his co-workers and Robert De Niro’s talk show host Murray Franklin from the first film. Those men aren’t all they are, and why wouldn’t that carry over to Batman? Presumably, this Batman knows that Arthur is guilty of killing his parents, but maybe they can move on from that.

The first one The Joker he ended up having Arthur finally lose his cool so much that he shot Murray in the face on live TV, to limit the fun. Still, Phillips’ comment does touch on something, namely how quickly Arthur fell in love, either romantically or openly. But Warner Bros. probably isn’t interested in making a decades of a footnote between Bat and Jokes in the original text, or at least no more than that Lego Batman just did it back in 2017. Considering Arthur’s luck with the people he crushes on, anything between this Clown Prince and a Dark Knight old enough to punch in the face could end up being a bad romance.

The Joker: Folie in Deux will hit theaters on October 4.
