United Nations, Jan 22 (IPS) – The global plastic consultation process, launched in 2022 under a resolution of the UN Environment Assembly, represents an unprecedented effort to combat the growing problem of plastic pollution.
Despite progress, the talks stalled at the end of 2024 due to differing views on scope, measures, financing, commitments and other issues. This conflict highlighted the challenge of balancing economic interests, development disparities, and planetary sustainability.
As 2025 begins, it brings a new sense of purpose and an opportunity to gather new energy for the important work ahead. The change in the calendar gives the global community an opportunity to reset, rethink, and renew the momentum needed to achieve a plastic agreement that meets the scale of this crisis.
