US President Donald Trump has said he is considering imposing a 10% tariff on Chinese-made goods as soon as February 1.
Trump said the discussions with his administration “are based on the fact that they are sending fentanyl to Mexico and Canada.”
Trump’s threats followed charge 25% import tax Mexico and Canada, accusing them of allowing undocumented immigrants and drugs to come to the US.
At a press conference in Washington on Tuesday, Trump again vowed to impose tariffs on the European Union.
“China is a bully, but the European Union is worse for us,” he said.
“They treated us very badly. So they will be taxed. That’s the only way you’re going to get back. That’s the only way you’re going to get justice.”
Shortly after his inauguration on Monday, the new president also ordered federal agencies to review existing trade agreements and identify unfair practices by America’s trading partners.
Meanwhile, a senior Chinese official spoke out against protectionism at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
China’s Vice Premier, Ding Xuexiang, called for “win-win” solutions to trade disputes without mentioning the US.
On the campaign trail, Trump had promised to impose tariffs as high as 60% on Chinese goods.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has promised to fight back.
“If the [US] “The president chooses to continue with tariffs, Canada will respond – and everything is on the table,” Trudeau said.
Ottawa is preparing controversial taxes to respond to the threat, which is reportedly worth billions of dollars.
Canada, China and Mexico are the US’s top trading partners.
Taxes are a key part of Trump’s economic plans. The president believes they can boost growth, protect jobs and raise tax revenue.
But many economists say the measures could lead to higher prices for Americans and hurt companies that have faced retaliation from other countries.
