A baby has been born on a crowded ferry from Africa to the Canary Islands this week, the Spanish coast guard said. It published a photo of a baby boy who was rescued by his mother and a number of other migrants.

Opposition groups in Venezuela say their leader, María Corina Machado, was briefly arrested and then released. This came after he spoke at a protest rally in Caracas on the eve of the controversial inauguration of President Nicolás Maduro. The UN expressed its concern after receiving reports of arbitrary arrests and intimidation in Venezuela ahead of opposition marches.
