When Fantastic Four: First Steps which starts happening this year, it will be the fourth time that something happens in a row. Four times in the last forty years it has been restarted Fantastic Four the film is made. And, if you can believe it, they all happened about 10 years apart. Does that bode well for this new film or does it point to a new reboot coming in 2035? Let’s break it down.
Undoubtedly the most popular Fantastic Four The film so far is the one released in July 2005. Directed by Tim Story, it starred Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis as Marvel’s first family. Despite mixed reviews, it was a big enough hit to get a sequel in 2007 Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. That didn’t work out and, alas, this iteration of the Fantastic Four was dead (until Evans reappeared Deadpool and Wolverine of course).
Ten years (and one month) later, in August 2015, a new version of the group was revealed. It was directed by Josh Trank, and Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell star this time. The film had its moments but the problematic production was finally shown on screen, and in the end, the film was a critical and financial failure.
Now it’s been 10 years and it’s July again, and another Fantastic Four team is on the way. Directed by Matt Shankman, this time the team is joined by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. The difference now, however, is that since Disney bought Fox, the Fantastic Four are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
And no, we didn’t forget about the OG. Roger Corman Fantastic Four the film was never officially released due to copyright issues, but it began to gain public attention in the summer of 1994. That beats our “10 year” vision, but only by a few months.
Therefore, without the exception that, since the 1990s, the new Fantastic Four groups that appeared in movies almost a decade apart (1994, 2005, 2015, 2025 respectively), what does this say about the franchise? Pretty obvious, right? No behind-the-scenes creative team has mastered the alchemy that has made comic book characters, dating back to 1961, so successful. But maybe, just done, the fourth time will be the charm. At least we hope so. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
