Welcome to 2025. Wave goodbye to the past and technology’s biggest losers. Picking our favorite villains in 2024 was a challenge when it wasn’t a good time for technology. With the sad dance that is social media, the will-they-or-won’t-they dance with TikTok shutting down in the US and endless curated and deep content, it’s loud. Is the internet slop? Is it fatigue? Is AI talking to AIs about AIs? Amidst all that, there’s the obsolescence of previous connectors, Intel’s massive struggles to turn its fortunes around, and, uh, those AI assistants.
And, because it’s a new year, we’ll be making some changes to Engadget’s newsletter over the next few weeks. We’ll still hit big news and tech events, but we’ll also include more context, more writers and editors and even some features from Engadget’s past. It’s the start of a new year, and a new crop of creative works has entered the public domain. Today, many materials copyrighted in 1929 and sound recordings from 1924 are fair game for free adaptation, reuse, copying and sharing. Several directors released their first projects with sound, such as Alfred Hitchcock Blackmail and Cecil B. DeMille’s Dynamite. 1929 was also the year that Walt Disney directed the short Skeleton Dance starring Ub Iwerks, and when Mickey Mouse played his first walkie-talkie.

Two games from the last ten years and a significant flop.
Sony recently revealed the first set of PlayStation Plus games in 2025 available to all subscribers. This month includes Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Need for Hot Speed Remarked again Stanley Cup: Ultra Deluxe. Suicide Squad surprise addition: It went through many delays, received negative reviews and reportedly cost Warner Bros. 200 million dollars. The developers have announced that the current season of content will be the last, although there are no plans to close the game yet. So play it while you can?
