Next year has a lot to look forward to in terms of big Hollywood releases. Next, resumes, heroes, etc. But one genre that’s always hot, but often overlooked, is horror—and 2025 delivers on it in horror. There are big budget monster movies, mid-budget slasher movies, returning franchises, hopeful franchises, and even a few major filmmakers dipping their toes in the blood.
Every year horror movies become a huge success and people act like it’s amazing. Well, 2025 is the year that won’t be a surprise. Among the big upcoming films is Leigh Whannell’s The Wolf ManGuillermo del Toro’s Frankensteinand Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride. New movies in progress Predator, Final Destination, Saw, Insidious, Conjuring, I Know What You Did Last Summer, again 28 days franchises are also on the way. Next is the most anticipated Black Phone, Five Nights at Freddy’s, again M3GAN they are coming. And what about filmmakers like Steven Soderbergh with You were thereRyan Cooler with They are sinnersand Edgar Wright and Running Man join the fun? And that’s not all. Yes, 2025 will be difficult.
What we are waiting for
Despite all those horror movies, 2025 should bring another big year for superhero movies thankfully. Captain America: Brave New World, Superman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and more. (Actually, that’s a can of worms we’ll tackle in another article.) In addition, however, 2025 brings many films that seem like products of another generation. Movies that we really want to like and enjoy, but we also have serious doubts about.
So what are we waiting for? To surprise me. This is because, on paper, many of them are beyond doubt. For example, movies like The Karate Kid: Legends again Tron: Ares. We love those original films but will the audiences of 2025 go to the cinemas to see them continue? There is that live action Snow White a remake that feels like it was already released years ago. Speaking of which, does the world need a live action revival Lilo & Stitch again How to Train Your Dragon? Even some big blockbusters, from the eighth Mission Impossible and the seventh Jurassic Parkthey all feel a little behind the times. We want them all to be beautiful! We hope they are. But, we all know how this usually happens.
Uncommon wisdom
For years, genre films like the ones we cover on this site have taken a back seat to the usual, dramatic fare when awards season rolls around. But in recent years, those movies have continued to enter those mainstream awards discussions: Everything Everywhere At Once, Standing Water, The Dune: Part Two, Black Pantheretc. We feel that this year could be another big one to change that narrative. When filmmakers like del Toro, Coogler, Soderbergh, Danny Boyle, and Bong Joon-ho all make weird sci-fi or horror movies, you get the feeling that those movies might break the awards barrier.
People to follow
James Gunn – Gunn is one of the last great filmmakers, and now studio executives, out there interacting with fans almost every day. And, his too Superman movie coming to theaters, and many other DC projects coming to fruition, his social media is worth following.
Michael Giacchino – The award-winning composer is excellent at exploring social media and his work at Fantastic Four getting ready for release, not to mention his directorial transition, it’s always good and fun to see what he’s up to.
Jon M. Chu – He released one of the biggest films of the year with They are not bad and will do it again in 2025 with Bad: Good. And, after those two crashes, he knows he can do whatever he wants next. Maybe you’ll break that on the internet when it happens.
Jason Blum – If 2025 is the year of horror, you better keep an eye on one of the scariest producers out there. He has put his hands on many, many movies listed above.
Companies to watch
Blumhouse – Again, the large number of horrors coming out in 2025 is noteworthy, and one of the companies directly facing Blumhouse, especially since it is now associated with James Wan’s Atomic Monster.
Sony Animation – Sony is one of the most underrated animation houses out there and 2025 was supposed to be the year of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verseunfortunately that doesn’t happen anymore. But with that in works, and a The Ghostbusters movie and more, it’s worth checking out.
Netflix – Because Netflix rarely dates or announces its biggest movies in advance, it can be easy to forget that the broadcaster is making some of the biggest movies in the world. Next year will continue that trend with films from the Russo Brothers, del Toro, and others, and you can be sure that more announcements are coming.
It’s a long shot bet
In 2024, I predicted that one of the many high-profile sequels scheduled for release would be considered for major awards. And that was accurate, thanks to Denis Villeneuve. In 2025, I think that will happen again but you can’t make the same prediction twice. So, by a long shot this year, I think one or more of the biggest blockbusters on paper—a superhero movie, Jurassic Park, Mission ImpossiblePixar, Disney remakes-will do the opposite, and bomb badly.
