It’s delicious! After its first appearance in August, The Greatest Horror is back for more clips and to discuss the most popular subgenres of horror. The first season dug into Stephen King adaptations, giant monsters, Japanese horrors, horror comedies, and tropes and clichés (with an emphasis on blockbuster movies)—leaving plenty of room for more. In this case, animal attacks, film effects, hidden gems, space horrors, and murderous days.
Many talking heads repeat; very clear The Greatest Horror filmed two (who knows how many) seasons back, and the list of interviewees includes David Dastmalchian, Kate Siegel, Joe Hill, Jona Ray Rodrigues, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Alex Winter, Tananarive Due, and the Boulet Brothers, among others. It’s an engaging group of people involved in the original creation of horror films and media, with academics, writers, critics, and programmers sprinkled in. Everyone clearly shares such deep love and appreciation.
As before, the editing is fast and the clips are well-paced, with stop-motion interludes and different cuts that finish the conversation in fun ways. One example is the corresponding lists of horror movie pets and the best in the episode “Animal Attack”; you can guess there Cujo falls into that situation. Although there is overlap between episodes—Jaws there’s a lot coming up, for example—there’s enough to cover that The Greatest Horror it doesn’t feel like it’s repeating itself or stretching itself too thin.
As the first season focused on the less obvious episodes, the second season manages to get weirder, more indulgent The Greatest Horror to cut through some unusual turf. This is a bonus for the viewer who gets to learn about a lot of subpar films, and a bonus for the speakers, who—especially in the “Hidden Gems” episode, which is a fun episode—have enjoyed being ignored. favorites, including many classic and international options, as well as cult classics.
The strongest episode is probably “Animal Attack,” which discusses how Jaws ushered in a wave of copycats but also encouraged a taste for films that included deep environmental concerns and “nature strikes back” themes, such as alligators jumping off the sidewalks and zoo animals going crazy with PCP; and “Hidden Gems,” though that may be my joy in seeing accolades piled on obscure likes Let’s scare Jessica to death again Psychic. “Killer Dates” may be less successful, simply because it has a very bad line.
