On Friday, WB revealed that it was messing with some of its movies, in particular Batman’s succession. The Matt Reeves sequel was originally slated to debut on October 2, 2026 and is now set to hit October 1, 2027. And fans are taking it…wrong.
Since the news of Batman Part II delay, social media is full of jokes and worries about what’s going on. Why is it taking five years to make a movie, TBECS business has been washed away—people want some answers. In Threads, James Gunn explained that the script for the film is not finished, and that director/co-writer Matt Reeves is “committed to making the best film he can.” He went on to say that it is “common” for a franchise to go five years or more between installments, and cited several as evidence: The Incredibles (14 years), the first two Alien movies (age 7), A photo (13 years), even his own Guardians of the Galaxy (6 years, although not optional).
It didn’t take long for commentators to pick up on that and argue that it already exists the rest franchises with little time between installments: your Marvel movies, yours star Wars (at least, initially), and so on. Anyway, Gunn’s point is basically, “yeah, there’s a delay, just relax.” Easier to ask than to do, especially considering the added context: Reeves’ debut Batman it was supposed to start in June 2021, and was postponed twice due to COVID. This news also comes shortly after Sony announced the directors Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which was due out this year, and will be in…TBD. In addition, Andy Muschietti, the director of the big Batman movie, which was announced earlier. Courage and Couragerecently revealed that it has been put on the backburner for undisclosed reasons. So that fans are ready to get any information about these movies, without knowing anything about them Spider-Verse or a Batflick—and I don’t know when they will know-they annoy them.
Unfortunately for them, they will just face each other. Batman Part IIIt’s not the only superhero movie that can be delayed, and several blockbusters have used that long wait between sequels to their advantage. (Case in point: the way the internet lit up the first Superman movie trailer in over a decade.) Corny as he says “let Reeves cook,” that’s all we can do. There will be more movies between now and October 2027. And if you like the need your fixation on Robert Pattinson being weird, you have Mickey 17 to strike in March.
