This is Takayuki Yagami’s second private eye trip; a spin-off of Sega’s famous, pulpy and convoluted Yakuza saga. You live in the same neighborhood of Kamurocho, the same yakuza gangs that roam the streets, and there are occasional cross-stories of side story characters that are, well, weird. But instead of punching punks in the face in the name of justice or honor, which was Yakuza style protagonist Kazuya Kiryu, Yagami fights with the power of his lawyer badge, drone evidence and… sometimes (read: often) kicks bad guys in the face.
The sequel skates even closer to some kind of TV drama sequel, with fights, chases and melodrama. For anyone who has played the series before, you are treading on familiar ground, but with a serious (realistic) story that focuses on violence and suicide in Japanese high schools, tied to a thousand agendas that include the legal system, politics and organized crime.
Yagami has many fighting styles to master, while there are love interests, batting cages, mahjong, skate parks and many other activities to immerse yourself in for hours. On PS5, Lost Judgment it looks good. Battles are fluid and the recreated areas of Tokyo and Yokohama are often filled with pedestrians, shops and points of interest. While Yakuza: Like a dragon took the franchise in a new way (response-based, funny), Lost Judgment it maintains the gameplay of the Yakuza series, with a new hero, finally, that got us interested.
