Thirteen people died after a navy speedboat rammed a ferry from Mumbai

At least 13 people have died after an Indian speedboat lost control and rammed a boat off the coast of Mumbai, a navy spokesman said.

Three navy personnel were among the dead, while more than 100 people were rescued, Maharashtra state minister Devendra Fadnavis said.

Footage of the incident posted online shows the high-speed boat spinning before crashing into the boat, which later overturned.

The Indian Navy said there was an “engine malfunction”.

A private boat was on its way to the Elephanta Caves, a popular tourist destination, when it was hit by a speed boat.

“A naval boat undergoing engine testing lost control and collided with a passenger boat,” the navy said in a statement, adding that it regretted the “tragic loss” of life.

A passenger on board told ABP Majha news channel: “A speedboat hit our boat and water started entering our boat and it overturned. The driver asked us to wear lifejackets.”

“I swam for 15 minutes before I was rescued by another boat,” said a passenger who did not identify himself.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote: “The boat accident in Mumbai is heartbreaking. My condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
