Seven tourists in Fiji have been admitted to hospital with suspected alcohol poisoning and many are reported to be in critical condition.
It is believed that they drank cocktails in the lounge on Saturday night local time and afterwards, they showed nausea, vomiting and emotional symptoms.
Four of the seven are Australian, aged 18 to 56, one is American and the other two are immigrants, according to local media reports citing the Department of Health.
This incident comes after a few weeks The deaths of six tourists in the Southeast Asian country of Laos due to suspected methanol poisoning.
The tourists from Fiji, who were reportedly staying at a Coral Coast resort, were first taken to Sigatoka Hospital.
All were transferred to Lautoka Hospital, according to the Fiji Times.
A 56-year-old woman from Australia has been under constant observation at the hospital and a 19-year-old woman, also from Australia, suffered a “serious medical episode”, according to ABC News.
Two other Australian women, aged 49 and 18, are in a critical but not so good condition, ABC reports.
Tourists have been advised to “be aware of the potential dangers surrounding alcohol consumption and methanol poisoning by consuming alcoholic beverages in Fiji” by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
The guide said visitors should “seek immediate medical attention if you suspect alcohol consumption”.
Fiji police are said to be investigating the circumstances of the incident.
Two Australian families in Fiji are receiving consular assistance, a spokesperson for Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs told the BBC.
