WHY: If there’s one thing I’ve learned from testing golf clubs, it’s that there’s no shame in using a little help. I’m certainly good at using a clean steel iron (once in a while), but that just doesn’t make sense going to the top of my bag when something with a little more forgiveness will help me get the ball going where I want it. . I’ve been using a hollow 2-/3-iron for years now, but this year I finally gave in and replaced my 4-back iron with a hollow body and boy, what have I been missing? I can easily hit the ball high and it just goes off the face. Not to mention, if I hit it lightly on the toe, I don’t have to worry as much about it carrying the distance I need as I do with a regular long rear iron. Maybe I’ll go with a hollow-body 5-iron next year!
Jessica Marksbury, Editor-in-Chief: Ping G Le3 Louise Putter
Ping G Le3 Louise

They are paired with the PING Pistol PP59 Deep Sea grip that provides a superior feel and premium look in the distinctive colors of the G Le3.

WHY: At last year’s ClubTest, I qualified for a new putter, the Ping G Le3 Louise. The transition to hammer head was a big change for me. My trusty Ping Isopur has been a staple in my bag since high school. I’m not a rational person, so since my placement has suffered in recent years, I never thought to blame my equipment. But upgrading to Louise proved to be a wise decision. I like the weight, it’s easy to point, and the connection feels great. According to my fitter, the putter is also best suited to my natural stroke style. I am very happy to make the change.

WHY: I have always been a poor player, which means my driver is the biggest weapon or liability in my bag. Earlier this year, I had the new Qi10 fitted, and the results were shocking. By reducing the length of my club in inches, I can completely change my dispersion without affecting my launch characteristics. The result? Best driving year of my life. Oh, and lots of warm and fuzzy feelings every time I pull this club out of the bag. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
Josh Sens, Senior Author: XXIO 12 Driver
XXIO 12 The Man Driver
$499
Swing easily and hit it clean with our new premium Driver, the XXIO 12. Its amazing ultralightweight feel and significant improvement in ball speed allow you to hit it off the 18th tee like you did on the 1st by avoiding the fatigue caused by the stiffness of the Woods. This one is in a class all its own. Feel the Difference.

WHY: Last year, on a golf outing with a young partner, I had the nerve-wracking experience of being outstruck every 70 yards. With growth, alas, comes limitations. But also wisdom. And I quickly made the switch to the XXIO 12, which makes clubs for what he politely describes as golfers with “moderate” swing speeds. On my first few shots with my new driver, I was concerned that the club might have too much whip. But I adjusted quickly, and that little bit of flexibility was exactly what I needed: more power without the extra effort that often leads to jumping. While I can’t say that I’m now hitting it past the small uns, I’ve gained at least 10 yards off the tee, and my shot dispersion is tighter than ever. Now, if only XXIO could find a cure for the yips.

WHY: About five years ago, I hit 3-woods perfectly. Too many tops, and if I wasn’t so shy, I was swinging golf balls well. But late last year, I put the Cobra DarkSpeed X model in the bag and hit it … OK. Hmm. I gave it another chance this year. It’s still good. It’s actually good. Forgiveness is the key word here. For me, it dives into the turf, and the ball goes forward. With a dark look, it looks like fun. It’s a keeper.

WHY: As a player who struggles with low launches and low spin situations, I needed a club that filled the gap I found between my 3 wood and 4 iron. The Heaven Wood has a very shallow face and 20° of loft, but a larger foot than the 7 wood. During the test, I didn’t notice the miss on the left that I usually see with the hybrid. I also found this club to be much easier to launch and spin higher than an extra long iron or hybrid. This new ball flight gave me more control and stopping power coming onto the green from 225 to 235 yards. Adding control from this distance eventually made par 5’s and long par 3’s more accessible. Next stop, 9 wood!
