Netflix announced at the Game Awards that its mobile multiplayer title Squid Game will be playable on Android and iOS without an active Netflix subscription when it arrives on December 17. However, anyone’s free time will only be available for an unspecified “indefinite time limit.” time.”
Squid Game: Released lets you play with friends online in a series of mini-games. Tournaments are drawn directly from the series or similar “kid’s classics” (only with more deaths).
The party royale game takes cues from the Mario Party franchise, but its inspiration may have been a bit too straight forward… and circular. In 2021, indie developer Dani published Crab Game for Windows, macOS and Linux. The title did not try to hide that it was inspired by the Netflix series (crab, octopus… get it?), which was taking the world by storm at the time. Its Mario Party-style mini-games were originally Squid Game tournaments, presented in the form of an animated video game. However, it later expanded to include separate tournaments in the series.
Even though we haven’t played yet Squid Game: Releasedthe game in its trailer has a striking resemblance Crab Gameincluding (almost) its cartoon-like art style. To be fair, the two could play quite differently than the Netflix trailer suggests. But based on what we see now, Netflix seems to have found inspiration in the indie dev that took inspiration from its series. (Cue Xzibit.) But hey, at least Netflix doesn’t seem to be suing the indie dev into oblivion.
