Terence Crawford says he’s not ready to retire in 2025 if he can’t fight the Canelo Alvarez fight he’s been fighting day and night. He says the fight between him and United super middleweight champion Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) is the one “everyone” wants to see and he will answer people’s questions.
Retirement Is Not Near
Crawford, 37, has not said who he will fight if he fails to win Canelo’s parachute retirement fight. IBF 154-lb champion Bakhram Murtazaliev and IBF interim champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. they will be eager to fight Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs). Those two champions Crawford will get old and old age of those who wear it.
However, it doesn’t make sense that Terrence would agree to fight any of those guys because they are great boxers, great juniors, and he would want to end his Canelo dream once and for all. It is possible that if Crawford does not get a date to lead Canelo, he will go to fight the WBC and WBO junior middleweight champion. Sebastian ‘The Towering Inferno’ Fundora because he is defeated.
Canelo vs. Crawford is actually NOT the fight US fans want to see. They would rather watch David Benavidez take on Canelo because he’s got a chance and he’s in his weight class. Honorable Turki Aalshikh would like to see Canelo-Crawford, which would be seen as the second or third choice of the US public.
Fans would love to see Canelo fight Benavidez or the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol 2 in a rematch on February 22nd. That’s a better choice for Canelo than a matchup against Crawford, which would be similar to when former 154-lb champion Jermell Charlo moved up to 168 and fought Alvarez last year.
Crawford is too small, weak, and old to compete with Canelo. The fans don’t want to see Crawford follow Mayweather’s plan of running and stuffing Canelo in 12 painfully boring rounds to watch. This is 2024, not 2013. Fans want value with their money today.
Looking for the Best Opportunities
“No, not yet. We’re taking it day by day. Right now, I’m enjoying life and I’m enjoying the fruits of my labor,” Terence Crawford told BoxNation when asked if there was any movement regarding a 2025 fight between himself and Canelo Alvarez.
“I wouldn’t say that. “Right now, I’m waiting for my options and I’m looking at the best opportunities and ways to choose Terence Crawford for my career,” Crawford said when asked if he’s ‘done’ with the sport if he can’t get the Canelo fight next year.
“That’s why you watch it and see. That’s what everyone wants to see what we’re fighting for because everyone has answers [correction: questions] which must be answered. The way they can be answered when Canelo and I enter the ring and fight. So, when we fight, everyone’s questions, what to do and what not to do, will be answered,” said Terrence explaining how the fight between him and Alvarez will be.
