WINSTON-SALEM, NC — It wasn’t a storybook ending. West Virginia players couldn’t lift retired coach Randy Mazey off their shoulders and celebrate a trip to the College World Series for the first time in program history. But Mazey’s final ride was magical, and when it ended with a 2-1 loss to North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Super Regional — oh-so-close to the promised land of Omaha — the Mountaineers celebrated their outgoing coach and celebrated. each other, between tears and bitter smiles.
