PS3 emulator RPCS3 now works on Raspberry Pi 5
Emulation of various PlayStation consoles has been common for years, and developers are constantly trying to do so on various platforms. On Monday, the developers of the PS3 emulator RPCS3 released a teaser on YouTube showing how their emulator works on arm64 hardware, specifically on . At the time, they also showed an emulator that works on Apple M1 chips. That said, the emulator can now run on arm64 chips across Windows, Mac and Linux.
If you’re not familiar with RPCS3, it’s an emulator that Atlus tried to spin Person 5‘released in 2017. In Atlus’ defense, the developer’s name has been dropped A person on its Patreon page. Patreon sided with the RPCS3 developers but asked them to remove all references to them A person articles.
Surprisingly, the PS3 emulator even runs on Raspberry Pi 5, which is not a gaming powerhouse. With some help, the RPCS3 team was able to push the hardware to its limits. The framerate is locked up to 30FPS, and the graphics look like they came straight off a PlayStation Portable screen, which is a 480p display from 20 years ago. The developers couldn’t render those games at the PS3’s native 720p resolution. Naturally, powerful Apple Silicon chips will provide games with high resolution.
Well, think of it this way. Back when you told people that the PSP could run PS3 games, no one would believe you. But the evidence is now here, and hints have shown how the games didn’t experience a severe frame drop. Although impressive, RPCS3 is not the first emulator to run natively on arm64 hardware, as that honor goes to Dolphin, a popular emulator for the Wii and GameCube.
