No More Separation?! Xiaomi Aims to Close the Apple-Android Compatibility Gap
Have you ever come across a situation where you wanted to buy a product like Apple’s HomePod or Apple Watch, but couldn’t because you didn’t have an iPhone? Well, we bet you’re not alone! But maybe that’s about to change, because Xiaomi is actively looking for ways to bridge the compatibility gap between Apple accessories and Android devices.
That’s quite a challenge given Apple’s tightly controlled ecosystem, but according to reports from Digital Chat Station on Weibo, Xiaomi is testing support for Apple Watch, AirPods, and HomePod and its phones. While AirPods already work with Android, features like wearable detection and multi-point connectivity are missing. The Apple Watch and HomePod currently require an iPhone for initial setup, which presents a major technical hurdle.
Xiaomi’s efforts may face major obstacles, including technical challenges and possible resistance from Apple—Previous attempts to close this gap, such as Beeper Mini’s iMessage solution for Android, have been blocked by Apple. Despite these obstacles, achieving compatibility between the Apple Watch and Android would be exciting, which could encourage other Android manufacturers to pursue similar programs.
However, it raises the question of why Android users would choose the Apple Watch over Wear OS smartwatches, which are designed specifically for Android.
Xiaomi is not alone in its pursuit of collaboration. Brands like OnePlus and Oppo have introduced features like AirDrop for sharing files with iPhones, although they require additional applications. Xiaomi has advanced with its HyperOS 2, introduced with the Xiaomi 15 series. This system allows seamless file transfer between Xiaomi devices and Apple hardware, screen mirroring on MacBooks, and direct access to iWork files without modification.
This development highlights Xiaomi’s commitment to it improve cross-platform functionality; If successful, Xiaomi’s efforts could mark a turning point in reducing the fragmentation of the ecosystem, possibly making Apple Watches work with Android devices in the near future. However, the success of these plans will depend on both the technology’s performance and Apple’s willingness to accept such changes.
