Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is “well” after surgery for a brain bleed, his doctors said.
The 79-year-old man was taken to a hospital in the capital, Brasília, on Monday after complaining of a headache.
An MRI scan revealed bleeding and Lula was transferred to the prestigious Sírio-Libanês Hospital in São Paulo for extubation.
Intracranial bleeding is caused a blow to the head survived a fall in her bathroom at the presidential palace in October, according to a hospital statement.
Doctors said they performed a craniotomy on the president, which is a procedure where part of the bone is removed from the skull to treat bleeding and relieve pressure. The bone is then replaced.
Lula was admitted to the intensive care unit and is “doing well,” the hospital said in a statement.
It also said that there were no complications during the operation.
Lula had slipped in the bathroom at the Alvorada Palace on October 19 and hit the back of her head.
He had to undergo five stitches and, on the advice of his doctors, canceled his planned trip to Russia for the BRICS summit.
He returned to his full-time job a few days later.
Lula has been in power since January 1, 2023 after narrowly beating incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in a closely contested election.
During the election campaign, he often joked that he had “the strength of a 30-year-old”.
