MIAMI – When Brylan West graduated from Tampa’s Freedom High in 2020, he didn’t have a scholarship.
Not in the NCAA.
Not in the NAIA.
Not even in junior college.
West, a cornerback, can hit every time. The problem was that he was overweight as he weighed 298 kilograms.
But when COVID hit that spring, West couldn’t get as much food as usual, and he began to lose weight. He lost 20 pounds … then 40 … 50 … and, finally, 70 pounds.
